2017...Eat Less, Fish More!

Another year has gone. I can't wait to see what 2017 brings us. 2016 was a great year for me. I finished my master's degree, published a book, and stayed healthy. Here's my list of new year's resolutions. Please share yours in the comments.

1. No Fudgsicles

Last year I kind of let myself get carried away on Fudgsicles. It says "no sugar" right in the label, these must be OK. Right? Hmmm...Lots of weird stuff in the ingredients:

Nonfat Milk, Maltodextrin, Sorbitol, Polydextrose, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Whey, Palm Oil, Tricalcium Phosphate, Cellulose Gel, Mono And Diglycerides, Cellulose, Gum, Malted Barley Extract, Salt, Guar Gum, Aspartame,* Polysorbate 80, Acesulfame, Potassium, Polysorbate 65, Citric Acid, Carrageenan, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Locust Bean Gum, Caramel Color

...and a warning: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE. But no sugar!

2. No Wheat

In 2016 I reintroduced wheat into my diet. I kept it "whole," as I wrote about last summer: Kamut and Farro review. And I started making whole grain sour dough breads from spelt and rye. I noticed a twinge of my old gout in the days after I'd eat several servings of whole wheat. I can only assume this indicates that Dr. Davis (Wheat Belly author), Dr. Ayers (Cooling Inflammation blog), and the rest who have been warning us against wheat are onto something. When I first took control of my eating back in 2010, wheat was one of the first things to go. I did not miss bread at all, and never got into the gluten-free bread replacement craze. But, sadly, I feel my recent experiments with whole wheat were a failure. I had nearly five full years of being gout free, and this year I had 3 or 4 attacks of gout, right after eating wheat. Oats, buckwheat, teff, and all manner of seeds are still on the menu!

3. No "Chips"

I'm not sure why, but 2016 also saw the reintroduction of potato chips, corn chips, and some other little oily, crispy snacks. I think it was just a mental slip...they are potatoes, how bad can they be?  I never meant to eat any, they just happen. How they got into my pantry is a mystery. Jackie does not buy potato chips that are disguised as health food, must have been the cat. The problem with these type of snacks...they seem to lead to a downward spiral of unhealthy eating. The salty, crispy texture leads me to eat more than I should, then makes me crave something sweet...like a fudgsicle.

4. Fasting

In 2011 I started intermittent fasting (IF) on a daily 18:6 schedule. Basically, I'd eat lunch at noon and finish dinner by 6pm, fasting the other 18 hours. Then once a week, I'd skip a lunch and dinner which created a 42 hour period of fasting. This worked very well for me, and I felt great. I stopped doing the once-a-week longer fasts at the same time I started eating more veggies and starches, but I have continued the 18:6 eating schedule for nearly 6 years now. This year I'm going to keep the 18:6 IF schedule, and try to do a weekly 42 hour fast. I'll write a couple posts soon on the benefits of prolonged fasting, but it seems to me that skipping a full day's eating provides the most bang for the buck, and daily IF'ing schedule helps people like me who tend to overeat.

5. Move more at work

I have a job where I'm on the computer a lot. I also have ample opportunity to walk around, get outside, and even do some exercising if I wish. I invented a whole routine that I can do, all while being productive at work. It's just that sometimes it's easier not to do it. For instance, I can take the stairs instead of the elevator. I can grab a quick 20 chinups and do some pushups. I can do squats anywhere. If I try, I can get in 30-60 minutes of walking during the day. During lunch break I can find a sunny spot outdoors and catch a good 30 minutes of sunshine. It just takes motivation!

6. Fish more...

I live in Alaska, on the banks of a river where people travel from all around the world to try to catch fish. People pay thousands of dollars to do what I can do any time I like. And after the water's frozen, I can still go fishing. I kind of got out of the habit the last couple years, what with classes and book writing and all. This year will see more wet lines and fish dinners.

Well, that's about it. Eat less, move more, fish more... How about you guys?  Any of you slipping into old habits?  Make a resolution!

I'll be keeping Veggie Pharm as more of a personal blog for health and lifestyle posts that don't fit the theme of The Potato Hack Chronicle. I'll be trying to write 1 or 2 new posts a week over there, it's been fun setting up and learning the WordPress blogging platform, thanks to everyone who has given me feedback and tips!

Here's to a wonderful 2017.
Later!
Tim

  1. Bill Lagakos has posted a couple of articles indicating it's better to skip dinner than breakfast, for all sort of reasons including circadian rhythm stuff. I've tried the breakfast-skipping thing and it didn't make me feel great. I'm going to give the other a shot...

    1. The old adage is "Eat Breakfast Like a King, Lunch Like a Prince, and Dinner Like a Pauper." I wish I could do this, but it just does not fit with my current schedule. Maybe someday when I'm retired and can enjoy a big breakfast. I find that if I eat lots during the day, I'm really hungry at dinner and beyond. I definitely eat less throughout the day skipping breakfast.

  2. Nonfat Milk and Maltodextrin are the same as sugar. Same effect on blood sugar and the brain/cravings. But I am sure you already knew that. :) HNY!

  3. Gout, Got a good case couple years ago when attempting to go ketogenic, which I never got to. Later read that any rapid weight loss often leads to gout since Uric acid is stored in fat and released when fat is shed. In my case about three weeks. I then ate ample bread and was cutting back on it. Since then I eat lots of sourdough bread and have had no gout. (and have lost no weight from 180 lbs (25lbs over decent weight for a 70yo male.))

    1. I had my very first taste of gout in 1999 when I tried Atkins for the first time. Never shook it, and it got worse over the years. Gout sucks! I really don't know if what I have been experiencing lately is gout or just inflammation in joints that were damaged by the gout.

  4. Happy New Year, Tim and everyone!

Man, those fish look great! Do you know how much I have to pay for fish? Do you know they are mostly farm-raised, fed corn pellets? That there's a great likelihood the wild stuff is not or that it has been misidentified? Just to,let you know how lucky you are, I would pay $40 per pound for Alaska wild salmon. Bluefish is a favorite and is cheapest at $10 per pound.

I've begun using chickpea four, fava bean flour, or lentil flour to coat the fish before cooking. Lentil flour gives amazing crust! I mix in spices too, like cumin.

Here's a healthy recipe for fudgsicles

    http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2011/08/11/creamy-chocolate-fudgsicles/

This woman has amazing recipes. Chances are that she has a healthy version of any dessert you might want.

My daughter loves veggie straws that are basically chips. Nothing veggie about them, LOL. I tried one. The crunch was addictive! It's easy to avoid eating the first, but eating just one starts the cycle.

  5. I've never had issues with eating questionable food (been too sick in the past - made me a little hard/ logical I guess!), but I've been intermittent fasting daily for God knows how long. I read an article that said detoxing from fasting really ramped up after 24 hours, so yesterday I ended a 41 hour fast (was going to be 42 but didn't really fit with the days activities) - not bad at all hardly any hunger pangs. Think I'll join you in a weekly 42 hour fast!

Past month I've also been playing with cold thermogenesis. Minimum of 5 mins in cold shower plus plunge pool at gym plus going out just t shirt (Temps ranging from 3-9c). I really like it - cannot see me ever stopping!

    1. I get the cold exposure when I can, and living in North Pole, Alaska gives me ample opportunity, lol. I've been seen in t-short and shorts at -35. Even in summer, the water is still darn cold. Quite invigorating to swim in ice cold water, for sure.

I need to check in with Eric and see how his CoolFatBurner is doing, last I heard he'd sold over $1M worth. I suspect we have not heard the end of cold thermogenesis for health benefits and weight loss.

  6. Hmmmmmm. You were eating chips and fudgsicles in 2016, but it was that pesky wheat that was causing the gout problems?! I've gone the 'McDougall' route and changed to a whole foods, plant based diet and have never felt better. Whole grains are a large part of my diet (including wheat and barley). McDougall recommends all grains, unless you have celiac disease. On the other hand, when I was in my 'Paleo Diet' mode, I was glutten free and stomach discomfort and irregularity was quite common.

    1. Haha, I was waiting for that! I believe in full-disclosure, and you are correct, sir. In regards to the gout, there have only been a handful of times that it was re-triggered. Twice after eating a lot of raw cocoa nibs, several times after eating a certain brand of 100% dark chocolate, and 3-4 times after eating several slices of my homemade bread and after eating whole grain kamut and farro.

In regards to the cocoa, I eat dark chocolate almost every single day, 100% Bakers or Hershey's Cocoa Powder...never an issue. But the raw cocoa nibs and Ghirardelli dark chocolate hit me really hard. I can only assume it is in the way that particular chocolate is manufactured. I've read there are several ways of fermenting raw cocoa beans and processing chocolate, but something there does not like me, lol.

We all should be continually evolving, experimenting, and listening to our bodies as we move along.

  7. Interesting about the wheat problem. Many years ago, I did a low calorie diet, which limited starches. I was permitted wheat crackers (3) but not potatoes. The diet was very successful! I lost 105 pounds in less than a year. But then, anytime I touched potatoes or potato starch I had horrible joint pains! Also, angry and crying. Not fun. The smallest amount set me off. I reasoned, oh potatoes are a nightshade...not good anyway, so I will just spend the rest of my life avoiding them! It was a huge shock to find out potatoes (!!!) and potato starch are healthy! I worked really hard to recover / change my microbiome so that I could have potatoes and PS without reacting. Amazingly, I can. I can't tell you exactly what I did because I did a lot of things. (Specifically, I took homoeopathic remedies). But I can tell you in my opinion, food issues are directly related to gut bugs. Lose the bugs, or have an imbalance, and you lose the ability to have the food. By abstaining from potatoes and staying strictly on my diet, I believe I lost or drastically reduced specific bugs that relied on potatoes. Thus, I conclude that restrictive diets, antibiotics and not having been breastfed, (all 3 apply to me) can cause us to lose or have limited numbers of specific gut bugs.

For example, my friends were on vacation, both got really sick, coming out "both ends" barely got back on the plane to come home. Afterwards, they both lost the ability to digest dairy. Is dairy the problem? No. But because their illness was so dramatic, there is a clear marker of before and after. My restrictive weight-loss diet was 11 months. How long did it take to lose some of my potato loving gut bugs? I suspect that the absence of RS led to an imbalance. Now, if I don't have potatoes for a while...I can get twinge of joint pain. Which I conclude to mean, that there is an in balance again. So I have some potatoes and everything is good again.

So many people have problems with wheat today and it makes me very sad. Sure, there is the GMO issue. But I think it has more to do with their internal balance of gut bugs. Wheat has been the staple for too long to conclude. Our modern lifestyle and health care is just so dramatically different from every generation that lived before us.

Does anyone know how Dr. Ayers is? I check his blog every few months and there has been nothing new. I miss his writings.

    2. Hi Natasha! Glad to hear you are doing well, keep it up! Dr. Ayers is still around, just on an extended sabbatical from blog writing. I keep bugging him to write some more.

I hear you on the wheat, but I think the biggest problem is the wheat, itself. All the stuff that Drs. Ayers and Davis pointed out about wheat reacting with our immune system and gut are right. If I were to experiment again with wheat it would be sprouted or long-fermented. I think maybe eating whole wheat berries, cooked like oatmeal, is asking for trouble, same as using modern highly processed flours.

      Happy New Year!

  10. Great post Tim. After indulging a little too much this past year (esp the holidays) I forced myself to do a good ol' fashioned 3 day Potato Hack right after Christmas. I usually do smaller ones like two potato meals a day, or a full day here and there, but I hadn't done the full 3 day in some time. Lost a few lbs and got my inner greedy fat man to shut up for a while...now I just have to stay on track.

I have debated whether wheat is bad for me or not over the years. I've removed it for weeks/months and never seemed to notice a big difference. I've been making my own bread lately and oddly enough I get less gas from wheat than I do from other starches...I don't know what gives but I seem to be okay with it.

Fasting...hmm...I used to combine it with cold water dousing (nice bucket of ice cold water dumped on yer head) - some interesting Russian folks taught this to me - worked great for curing colds and the like. I'm too much of a sissy to do it these days. :)

  11. Good luck! I have no doubt you'll accomplish all these resolutions!

  12. Tim, I tried adding some whole wheat and beer back into the menu in mid '15 with some good and some mixed results after retooling my gut with pre and probiotics over the last several years. However, recent blood work shows elevated antibodies to thyroid and my doctor ordered me to stop gluten again and be fairly strict with it. I too think Ayers and Davis were spot on with the immunogenicity of gluten and associated proteins.

Thanks for all you do, Tim. These all look like great goals, good luck!

  13. I too have noticed the best results (weight and vitality) when adding 1-2 longer fast days (or more calorically restricted, ie 5:2 style fasting) to a daily restricted window. So I'm doing something similar, adding in a longer (24+) fast per week on top of a daily feeding window.

  14. Hey, happy new year!

I went through all kinds of diet (low carb, high carb, no meat, just meat, etc) over the years. I am back to where I started LOL but I learned a shit ton of things and I can cook things, am not afraid of fasting (did one meal a day, 2 day fast / week, etc). I eat 3 meals a day these days, with no emphasis on any foods except that most days, I eat veggies, fruits, starches + eggs. My diet is maybe 10% of what can be considered junk foods but the main difference for me came from working out regularly and biking for commuting to work.

Food-wise, the only thing that seems to distress me a bit is an excess of inulin (I used to have some powder around - it just leads to some bouts of depressed mood and excess gas). I can eat tons of onions, garlic, etc, no problem, but pure inulin powder is a nogo. Go figure :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It might be the brand of inulin. I read a study that when people had discomfort with inulin, it was usually inulin that had a short chain length. Longer chain lengths didn't cause as much discomfort. I cannot recall if read that or guessed that shorter chain length ferments very quickly and early in the colon, whereas longer chain inulin ferments in a more spread out way.

Some brands are specifically short-chain because (I think) they are sweeter and some people use them as sugar substitutes. Others use a mix of short- and long-chain. I think the best for our purposes have a more natural mix of short-, medium-, and long-chain. I've been very happy with the Viv product, but it's expensive.

I have a hypothesis that dandelion root powder and yacon root powder are high in short-chain. They used to cause me big problems, when garlic and onion did not. I fought through the problems and won. I can eat them now no problem.

  15. Dear Tim,

Happy New Year! How are your bees doing?

The fudgsicles' ingredients themselves are the key to your cravings: MSG aka "processed free glutamic acid." This excitotoxin is used by the food industry as a "flavor enhancer" and it is well-known to create food cravings. Industry loves this because we buy more of the foods with MSG/processed free glutamic acid.

MSG is also well-known for exciting brain cells to death as well as ravaging & overloading the glutamate receptors all over our bodies, including our guts.

The food industry has ditched the use of the term "MSG" and replaced it with 40+ ingredients, which all contain MSG. Cleverly hidden. Also, it is not well-known that the process of the break down of proteins into their constituent amino acids creates processed free glutamic acid, as well. Hydrolyzed this or that, etc.

You should also know that wheat protein (gluten) and milk protein (casein) are also very high natural sources of glutamate. Industry knows this, as well. Try limiting or eliminating these proteins for a bit and see if your tendency to "crave" doesn't magically just disappear. (But get rid of the syntheitc MSGs first...)

Here are the ingredients in these fudgsicles which contain an (unknown amount of) processed free glutamic acid:
    -non-fat milk
    -whey
    -cellulose gel
    -gum
    -malted barely extract
    -guar gum
    -citric acid
    -carrageenan
    -natural and artificial flavor
    -locust bean gum

Aspartame is also in them: like MSG, it is also an excitotoxin. You are getting a double whammy of brain cell killing chemicals with these fudgsicles.

Be aware that the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) allows foods labeled “organic” to have certain ingredients containing MSG/processed free glutamic acid. These ingredients include:

-acidified sodium chlorite (secondary direct antimicrobial food treatment and indirect food contact with surface sanitizing. Acidified with citric acid only.)
    -broth
    -calcium citrate
    -carrageenan
-citric acid (produced by microbial fermentation of carbohydrate substances)
    -cornstarch
    -enzymes
    -flavors
    -gelatin
    -gellan gum
-gums (water-extracted only: Arabic, guar, locust bean, and carob bean.)
    -starches
    -whey protein concentrate
    -xanthan gum
-yeast (may include products like yeast autolysate, brewers yeast, nutritional yeast, etc.)

DON'T EAT THESE THINGS! Make your own fudgsicles with a Zoku pop maker - very quick and easy with your own ingredients & honey!

Latest info shows that MSG is being made industrially by fermenting genetically modified bacteria and using Roundup Ready GMO sugar beets as a medium. Is that scary, or what?

Love your website! Ditch the MSG!

  16. Correction to my post above about MSG: The list of USDA National Organic Program ingredients which contain MSG/processed free glutamic acid should NOT include broth; this was an error on my part.

However, most soups/broths/stocks usually DOo contain MSG/processed free glutamic acid.

  17. Gluten and casein are not sources of glutamate. BUT are gluta(m?)ergic. Casein and gluten are exorphins. Meaning upon consumption they break down the natural endorphin system over time, and the more so if factors attributing to susceptibility to that. I think even chris kresser doesn't realise this, and what the implications/ramifications are.

I'm a prime example of this. having light ass (very noticeable improving with ldn after 3weeks, not even on optimal dose i believe), and having gone trough psychosis (and idont remember but could be on oat test shown as well), I was severely glutamate - GABA imbalanced. Peeps with autism and psychosis are known to have excitotoxicity levels of glutamate, and in my case definitely too low GABA (ciprofloxacine killed the receptors, and theanine is a miracle supplement to me. That front also strongly, improving trough ldn). I believe the reason why they say that psychosis leads sometimes to brain lesion (as I definitely have had in some amount, but even worse were/are the antipsychotics) is the braincellkilling of too much glutamate.

So, I reiterate, exorphins in too high amount for the body (as the SAD person is well over) puts strain on the endorphin system, making the endorphin receptors less in numbers and in function (like diabetes insulin situation i assume).

Autisitics have severely low functioning endorphin system. Psychotics, have severely overstrained endorphin system (my case: cannabis utilising dynorphin, that is the true cause of psychosis, severe stress of all kinds troughout life, exorphins which i as light autistic am particularly susceptible to, and fungal exorphins which are most hazardous of all).

Sorry if this got long winded again. I just feel that these types of explanations I'm giving is info that we could all very much use. If we would just understand what it pertains to. Though, it seems to me people just glance over this stuff (or don't like what or the way i put here)

If I didn't know better, I would be mind-boggled as to how to prominent paleopeople (or just good alternative practitioners in general) don't have much of a clue that the endorphin system (and among the many things of importance to it, exorphins) is HUGE. I mean, this should be right next to saturated fat vs polyunsaturated fat topic in marks daily apple archives. Yet I only came across this information on a random dutch website and not ever did I see signs in the past 4 years there's anyone in the health realm realising 5% of this stuff.

    1. Mister Meat,

I found your reply extremely interesting! Thank you. GABA and glutamate, as neurotransmitters, are supposed to be in tight balance in our CNS/body. MSG, an excitotoxin, completely throws this balance off - and since most of us are (unknowingly) ingesting MSG 3 meals per day, 7 days a week, this system is under perpetual attack.

This article over at Mike Adams' the Health Ranger tells the story: MSG and aspartame are the two leading causes of central nervous system damage in the United States (http://www.naturalnews.com/039199_central_nervous_system_damage_MSG.html)

MSG is now being produced through industrial fermentation using genetically-modified bacteria being fed GMO, Round-Up Ready sugar beets.

NO ONE knows the effects of this GM chemical brew brew upon our biomes & immune systems, let alone our CNS.

How are you getting better? What are you doing?
      Laura

PS Do a search on MSG at Mike Adams' website, Science.NaturalNews.com (http://science.naturalnews.com/About-Science-NaturalNews.html). He archives scientific studies the food industry won’t willingly publicize and has made it extremely easy to do a search.

  18. Mr. Meat,

The term "exorphins" was new to me. I will read what I found on a search at Green Med Info (another excellent place to search for scientific articles): http://www.greenmedinfo.com/toxic-ingredient/gluten-exorphins.

I struggle with depression/anxiety so I greatly sympathize with your issues! I went Paleo, threw out grains/beans and added in grassfed, grass finished beef and healthy fats and I had incredibly good changes happen!

I may be able to point you in a good, new direction:

Dr. Carl Pfeiffer was aware of the gluten connection to schizophrenia & mental illness. He was an ortho-molecular doctor: their focus of healing is on using food, vitamins, minerals and supplements for healing, as well as assessment of what is biochemically out of balance. Dig into his work, including with wheat/gluten/psychiatric issues.

Dr. William Walsh follows in Pfeiffer's footsteps today. Read his book: Nutrient Power (http://www.walshinstitute.org/nutrient-power.html) Walsh was the head of the team who was allowed to test Beethoven's hair to determine what led to his physical/mental issues (lead): http://www.walshinstitute.org/uploads/1/7/9/9/17997321/beethoven_research_summary.pdf

This was Beethoven's last wish: to have someone find out why he suffered so. Walsh did. How cool is that!

Walsh co-founded a website which gives people with "brain issues" access to data coming from the doctor's who treat naturally: http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/

I have had TREMENDOUS help from Trudy Scott who focuses on depression/anxiety help using food, supplements and testing. Here is her current blogpost on GABA: http://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/gaba-anxiety-add-tryptophan/

Read Scott's book,The Anti-Anxiety Food Solution (http://www.everywomanover29.com/store/), search her blog and do post. She, like Tim (THANK YOU and congrats on your masters!!!) answers posts in her blog and is dedicated to getting help and info out to us.

Trudy Scott trained with Julia Ross: read her books! Also, they both consider Joan Mathews Larson to be the expert in food, mood, nutrition, addiction, etc. Read Larons's work, Depression Free Naturally (most of it is online here: http://www.joanmathewslarson.com/HRC_2006/Depression_06/DepressionFree_TheBook.htm )

Trudy Scott, Julia Ross and Joan Mathews Larson may have huge pieces of information/healing that may help you.

Finally, dig into the work of the ortho-molecular doctors here: http://orthomolecular.org/. Their work has been blacklisted by the AMA for decades. However, IMHO, they offer the best hope to those of us with mental illness/psychiatric issues ...nowadays being deemed brain inflammation.

And check out Trudy Scott and Joan Mathews Larson's info on pyroluria. A (perhaps) genetic deficiency in B6 and zinc, which many people who have addiction issues/depression/anxiety/psychiatric issues have. Trudy Scott has a pyroluria questionnaire; go to her blog and see if pyroluria resonates with you. Has helped me tremendously, as well.

    Sincerely HTH,
    Laura

PS Tim, sorry, lots of URLS ...again!

  19. Hey Mr. Meat-

    Two more thoughts:

    1. Read Trudy Scott's blogpost, "A gut feeling – the gut microbiome in health, diseases and behavior" (here: http://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/gut-microbiome-diseases-behavior/). She cites this study, "Control of brain development, function, and behavior by the microbiome:"

"More recently, studies have suggested that gut bacteria can impact neurological outcomes–altering behavior and potentially affecting the onset and/or severity of nervous system disorders. In this review, we highlight emerging evidence that the microbiome extends its influence to the brain via various pathways connecting the gut to the central nervous system. While understanding and appreciation of a gut microbial impact on neurological function is nascent, unraveling gut-microbiome-brain connections holds the promise of transforming the neurosciences and revealing potentially novel etiologies for psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders."

    2. Are you making your own ferments? Do it! One thing I learned from Dr. Art Ayres' blog, Cooling Inflammation, was if you are not making your own ferments, you're not trying hard enough!

That said: I just made 1/2 gallon of my first-ever sauerkraut! Finally! Yahoo! (I've been doing my own 24 hour heavy cream yogurt for 3 years. Have experimented with using different Lacto and Bifido bacteria which produce GABA - need to try again and will report back...)

He recommends this book, Fermented Vegetables, (https://www.amazon.com/Fermented-Vegetables-Zucchini-Complete-Fermenting/dp/1612124259/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1389292888&sr=1-1) which I am poised to buy.

See: http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com/search/label/fermented%20food . His blog is a goldmine of information, just like vegetablepharm is! How lucky are we...

PS And Tim, how are your bees doing? My husband-beekeeper has recently found a study by a beekeeper which definitively links CCD to use of neonics. When I find it, I'll post it. The bees survived the summer season - and when winter hit they all died (the ones exposed to neonics, that is.)

    1. Bees doing fine, thanks! Not sure they will make it through the winter, coldest in years. We'll see. Colony Collapse Disorder is definitely worrisome, and I've seen the neonics connection papers. Shame.

    2. Tim,

My beekeeper husband and I went to a beekeepers' conference in CT last fall; a beekeeper originally from Russia (he now lives in MO), Dr. Leo Sharaskin raises his bees naturally, w/o, chemicals and he introduced us to horizontal hives, which have been used in places like Russia and Poland for a century. They are designed for bees in cold climates.

We are going to switch over to his beeware, as we live in upstate NY with cold winters.

He has the plans for the hives online, for free: http://www.horizontalhive.com/email-website-sharashkin/dr-leonid-sharashkin.shtml

Also see Layens' book on horizontal hives: http://www.horizontalhive.com/buy-hive-bees/swarm-trap-top-bar-sale.shtml

Dr. Leo's books are also well-worth the purchase! He is an amazing person, if you can ever meet him and talk bees.

Here's a quote from his website you will love:

"In 2008 I decided to retire and devote myself to raising my family and working in my garden. But a friend told me: 'Leo, that’s great that you are happy planting potatoes, but you need to be telling other people how to be happy planting potatoes!' ”

  21. Laura,

what i'm doing, specifically related to glutamate/GABA?:
symptomwise: l-theanine. healingwise: repairing my endorphin system(which accounts for the biggest part of the immune system) by using low dose naltrexone. in tandem with diet a la phd with beans (and a bit of oatmeal for beta-glucans, rs). a little unshelled hempseed, and 2 egg yolks, as to not consuming all that much meat/fish (200g a day)
dealingwithfunguswise (as the fungus keeps the perpetuating cycle going): one day turpentine (with castor oil), other day boric acid (i can get it here in belgium, how bout that. and it works). parasite and excess yeast killing supplements a couple. count diet and ldn in this aspect also

since ldn(yet to find optimal dose) trough now (3weeks) I've only done 10days of so-so diet, 10 days of potato diet, not even optimal circadian rhythm and no walking/exercise (i won't begin to explain. i'm getting that in my day next few weeks). and even so I now have achieved more results than ever before, also on the anxiety/racingmind/feelingcentered front. The day I will see no more bloating after god knows how many years, and constant mucus drying up, then I will jump in the air and shout it's a miracle!

Healing the endorphin system leads to healing on almost all fronts, from the root up. Diet and resisant starch are very viable ways to do so, but in the more serious cases (and i vouch for every normal case as well) ldn hacks the immune system. as if you don't need to change your diet etc. I say as if, because its still imperative to get your diet/lifestyle in order. its the synergism that leads to wholeness. diet and rs aim to improve immune system (trough healthy gut ecology and whathaveyou), ldn makes for this effects as you're doing all that. also improves your gut ecology, trough increased motor migratic complex (bowel movements, to do with endorphins) and immune cells doing work (to the gut ecology) whereas it did (way) less so before. Its pretty magical.

I've been consuming alot of info regarding emotional / spiritual aspects of healing. And I strongly believe that ldn / healing endorphin system takes care of alot/most of that as well. I experienced several nights of dreams whereafter I feel I've processed and resolved inner feeling/trauma's. decent functioning dynorphin system allows you to let go of experiences / feelings, screwed up dynorphin system is where you see the many cases of people not being able to let go no matter what psychotherapy. But I do aknowledge there's a field to explore there, spiritual and emotional changes for the betterment of yourself. I've got some time on my hands (as you may tell), so I'm going to dive into (longer) meditation.

  22. Laura,

Dr. Carl Pfeiffer & Dr. William Walsh & trudy scott, Julia Ross and Joan Mathews Larson, etc. looked into it, already familiar with all that. decent stuff, good sources for other people who want to start looking into things.
yeah cooling inflammation, i appreciate very much the info that he's put out. back in the day skimmed trough the whole site and its in my little gazette ready to read another blogpost maybe some time.

ah, i remember back in the day I made sauerkraut the first times. gonna get back at it again next week. doing potato diet 2weeks on 2 weeks off (for protein reasons and optimal healing/balance), have lost 3 kg in 10days. praise the potato!
making your own ferments, yes or no, its been a huge debacle for me (with all the stuff that comes into play with it regarding sibo/fungalovergrowth). But I say yes. In probiotics I have less faith, although in theory it should have net same effect as sauerkraut. sauerkraut after stomach acid delivers as much probiotics as a probiotic supplement bypassing stomach acid. but if you use probiotics and you havent healed yet, you can spend another so many dollars/euros on these supplements. and then there's a whole lot of things that come into play with probiotic supplements that makes me uncertain about the worthwileness of spending your money on it (as i've done in the past)

  23. Tim and Laura,

Neonics from the usual stuff, neonics from chemtrails (though i'm not convinced on that one), geo-engineering trough chemtrails and HAARP, and the omnipresent emf. All these factors combined are whats killing us, with the bees being sort of canaries in the coalmine. But then in this case dead bees in the hive (sorry thats not funny).
Geo-engineering is basically weather manipulation, these are what make the effects (think of storms, droughts, temperature weirdness) of so called global warming. There's no global warming. Just fools f*cking with the flat earth.
You may guess one time where HAARP is located. It starts and ends with an A.

I can give you more convincing video's on chemtrails etc, but this is one where a metereologist explains what they're doing up there in the sky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX_XVp7kvec
